about

HarmoniMonk Volume 13 serial release continues with Monk’s jaunty tune “Locomotive.” The usual gaggle of tin sandwiches is graced by my many-time band mate, longtime roommate, and dear friend Bill Dye on steel guitar.
Bill is definitely a talent deserving wider recognition -- an incendiary guitarist and sublime steel guitar player.

“Locomotive” is rumored to appear on the legendary “When Wills Met Monk” session, which was never released and may indeed may be no more than an enduring rumor. Pairing Monk and the Texas Playboys seems like a natural to me, and this rendition imagines this partnership.

For his part, Bill prepared by transcribing Joaquin Murphey’s legendary rendition of Darius Milhaud’s unpublished “Study for Bitonal Steel Guitar”, which Bill heard once in a dream played backwards. The effort paid immense dividends as you will no doubt hear on the current track.

For my part, I once again use Andre’ Coelho’s harp mic running into a Quilter Micro Pro Mach 2 for both chromatic and diatonic tracks. Delivered the goods on the molten “lonesome whistle” voice that blasts in the background repeatedly more or less on schedule.
