about

Wrapping up serial release of HarmoniMonk Volume 13 with an original tune that swoons in the intoxicating vapors of the Monkosphere. “5 and 3 Blues” is a basic 12-bar blues in C with a quirk in the groove: the meter is 15/8 with an accent pattern that harmonizes a 5-beat feel tickled on the ivories, a 3-beat feel plucked out on the bass, and the ghost of Jimmy Yancey playing “Yancey Special” hovering over the whole excursion.

Some call this a “5 against 3” polyrhythm. I prefer to feel it as the recurrent departure and conjunction cycle of two planets ringed in black fire just beyond the gaze of our telescopic eyes, but right in the cross hairs of our longing hearts.

The usual tin sandwich brigade is graced by the talents of Allaudin Ottinger, weaving elusive yet rock solid arabesques on various tar frame drums. Allaudin is one of America’s best-loved leaders of the Dances of Universal Peace. He has facilitated camps, seminars, and retreats around the world since 1979 and is a senior dance mentor and teacher in the Sufi Ruhaniat International. Sufi-inspired CDs produced by Allaudin in the last few years include the “Two Niles for Imam Bilal Hyde”; his own well-loved collection of dances, zikrs, and tavern songs called “In the Everywhere and Always”; “Saladin,” the epic poem by Murshid Samuel Lewis as read by Wali Ali; and, most recently, “Vision, Bewilderment, and Love.”

Allaudin and I were also longtime bandmates in BCR (Black Crack Revue), Kansas City’s premiere Afro-nuclear-funk-swing-reggae-tango band for decades. Nice to be playing together once again.
