Serial release of HarmoniMonk Volume 17 continues with “Ugly Beauty,” Thelonious Monk’s one and only waltz. The melody maintains a slightly sad and delicate lilt across the dance floor, even when the disjointed harmonies drop banana peels here and there. The tune’s less appealing features somehow make it all the more attractive.

In this performance, lead chromatic harmonica glides over a hoarse “chromatic Jew’s harp” (patent pending) twanging a bass line, and periodically stumbles into periods of alternate rhythms swollen with thickly processed free-reed monstrosities.
