"Friday the 13th" is Monk’s shortest tune. A four-bar melody lopes on a treadmill of four chords vamping in two-bar segments. Monk’s approach transforms a recipe for tedium into a trance. It romps all weekend long, while fully mindful of the calendar’s bad omens.

Team HarmoniMonk opts for a more expanded circuit, concocting a series of mood swings careening between mirthful Mardi Gras abandon and penitent chest-beating reserved for the Day of Atonement. Nothing is ever quite as fun--or as bad--as it's supposed to be.
